Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel arch bridge across Sydney Harbour that carries rail, vehicular and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore. The dramatic view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia. The bridge is locally nicknamed "The Coathanger"or "Colin" because of its arch-based design.

The bridge was designed and built by Dorman Long and Co Ltd, Middlesbrough Teesside and Cleveland Bridge, Darlington, County Durham and opened in 1932. Until 1967 it was the city's tallest structure.[citation needed] According to Guinness World Records, it is the world's widest long-span bridge and it is tallest steel arch bridge, measuring 134 metres (429.6 ft) from top to water level.[citation needed] It is also the fourth-longest spanning-arch bridge in the world.

León

The Catedral de Santa María de León or León Cathedral (also called "The House of Light") is the cathedral of the city of León in northwest Spain. It was built on the site of a Roman bath of the 2nd century which, 800 years later, King Ordoño II converted into a palace.


León Cathedral's great doors, its rose window, the choir (one of the oldest in the country) and the delicacy of some figures, like the venerated Virgen Blanca presiding over the constant traffic of visitors, are among the many impressive features of this cathedral.

History

León Cathedral, dedicated to Santa María de la Regla, was declared of Cultural Interest in 1844. It is a masterpiece of the Gothic style dominating the mid 13th century, by master architect Enrique.

In the late 16th century it was virtually finished. It was erected on the site of Roman hot baths dating from the 2nd century, which were converted into a royal castle by king Ordoño II in the 10th century.

Notre-Dame

Construite entre les XIIe et XIVe siècles, la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris est reconnaissable notamment grâce à ses 2 tours et à ses 3 portails, marquant l’entrée du monument depuis la place du parvis... La hauteur des tours atteint les 69 mètres tandis que la flèche, construite au XIXe siècle, culmine à 90 mètres. Célébrée par l’écrivain Victor Hugo dans son roman du même nom, la cathédrale est un chef-d’œuvre gothique, souvent décrite comme un ensemble de « délicate dentelle de pierre ».

Avant de pénétrer dans la nef et d’admirer en particulier les vitraux, dont certains datent du Moyen-Âge, levez les yeux et remarquez les gargouilles à l’air malicieux qui vous observent depuis les rigoles de l’édifice

L’Eglise Saint-Eustache

grâce à la richesse des œuvres d’art qu’elle abrite ("Martyre de saint Eustache" par Vouet ou "statue de la Vierge" par Pigalle), l’Eglise Saint-Eustache se distingue aussi par ses dimensions hors norme (33 m de haut, 100 m de long et 43 m de large) qui le rapproche davantage d’une cathédrale.


Des immenses dimensions qui permettent à cet édifice symbole du quartier des Halles d’offrir à ces auditeurs, une qualité acoustique rare.


Autour de son organiste titulaire vedette, Jean Guillou, l’Eglise Saint-Eustache organise toute l’année des concerts où on peut entendre des orchestres symphoniques, des musiques de Chambre… et bien sur, le fameux Chœur de Saint-Eustache.

Saint-Valentin

Le jour de la Saint-Valentin, le 14 février, est considéré dans de nombreux pays comme la fête des amoureux et de l'amitié. Les couples en profitent pour échanger des mots doux et des cadeaux comme preuves d’amour ainsi que des roses rouges qui sont l’emblème de la passion.

À l’origine fête de l’Église catholique, le jour de la Saint-Valentin n’aurait pas été associé avec l’amour romantique avant le haut Moyen Âge mais avec l'amour physique. La fête est maintenant associée plus étroitement à l’échange mutuel de « billets doux » ou de valentins illustrés de symboles tels qu’un cœur ou un Cupidon ailé.



À l’envoi de billets au XIX siècle a succédé l’échange de cartes de vœux. On estime qu’environ un milliard de ces cartes sont expédiées chaque année à l’occasion de la Saint Valentin chiffre battu seulement par le nombre de cartes échangées lors des fêtes de Noël. On estime aussi que 85 % de ces cartes sont achetées par des femmes.
